Remember the Results

It might have been in January or February of this year. I was speaking to a person about the vote. During the conversation I announced during the 40s and 50s, my parents were Republicans as most Blacks who could vote were. The Republican Party was the Party of Lincoln. The man who set Blacks free. I can remember my father not voting for John Kennedy. Saying, who did that Catholic boy think he was. The country needed Richard Nixon, a seasoned politician. Someone who had already worked for the great Dwight D. Eisenhower. He already knew his way around Washington. Nixon was a man with experience. Later he learned to love John Kennedy dearly.
The person said yea, Abraham Lincoln did not favor Negros, he only aimed to unite the union. Regardless of what his aim was, he made it possible for Barack Obama to become our 44th president. Too often we look at the intent rather than the results. What if C. Breckinridge had won, a member of the Democratic Party. History might have gone in a different direction.
During the Christmas Holidays I was at a Subway Restaurant looking in my purse for my credit card. A White woman behind me said you do not have to search for your card. I will pay. I don’t know if she had a guilty conscience for something she or someone in her family did. She may have been in a hurry. Her church may have encouraged her to pay forward. I don’t know the rationalization for what she did. The only thing I know for sure, I was blessed.
There are times it seems as if history is against us as a race of people. It is important for us to know who we are as well as whos’ we are. We must not forget regardless of our politics. If we know who we are as well as whos’ we will not only endure but we will thrive.
I am not sure who wrote this song but it is a song I will always remember.

You, who have dreams
if you act, they will come true.
You can turn you dreams
to a fact it is up to you.
if you have the soul and the spirit
Never fear it you’ll see it through
hearts can inspire other hearts with their fire
Give me some men
who are stout-hearted men
who will fight for the rights they adore.
Start me with ten who are stout-hearted men
And I’ll soon give you ten thousand more
shoulder to shoulder, and bolder and bolder
they grow as they go to the foe
then there is nothing in this world can stop or mar a plan
When stout-hearted men
walk together hand and hand.
